In the weeks that followed, the Castilian king administered to his Muslim prisoners a taste of the medicine that the Moors' Christian captives had previously suffered. Christian and Jewish villagers lined the streets, whispering and watching in frenzied awe as the frail and spent prisoners lugged the old bells of the Santiago de Compostela, strapped to their backs with rusty chains, back to where they came from.

The Castilian king's first order of business was to rebrand the mosque as a Christian worshiping place. On the 29th of June, 1236, the new subjects of the Castilian crown congregated at the former mosque and witnessed the first dedication of the Mezquita to the Virgin Mary, marked by “rituals of purification.” Though where exactly the consecration was held is unclear, Christian worshipers began to pray towards the mihrab in the east (which contained the host and main Bible of the parish), rather than the south of the former mosque.
